The night before April 19th 2008, I sent text to Boy, Jeane, Dave, Emma, Yoga, Riki and Rico to be at PasFes (Pasar Festival) - Kuningan at 6.30am the next morning for our climbing trip to Citatah, Padalarang – West Java. It took us about 2 hours by Cipularang highway to get to Citatah.

Citatah area is an area with vast limestone hills. It has several crags for climbing such as tebing 48, tebing 90 and tebing 125. These areas are frequented by adventure climbers as well as the weekenders. The area offers nice views and many choices of climbing locations with varying degrees of difficulty from beginners to advanced. It’s challenging enough to be used by the Special Forces Units of the Indonesian Armed Forces! The people that frequent Citatah are also very friendly which creates a really nice vibe for climbers who are just learning the sport.

Our destination is tebing 125, where we can find tracks with different difficulties since the participants have different climbing abilities. Here they can practice top roping up to lead climbing for the more experienced ones. I accompanied and supervised them, especially the beginner ones who still need guidance and instruction to improve their climbing skill and technique and also to ensure their safety.

Following a long day of climbing, we went to Bandung for late lunch at Pascal Hyper Square. After resting for a bit we continued to our next stop, the Eiger shop in Cihampelas. This is a shop that specializes in outdoor equipment such as climbing gear, trekking gear, etc. At the Eiger shop, they have an outdoor climbing wall and also indoor climbing facility where you can try and practice bouldering (a style of climbing emphasizing power, strength, and dynamics).

Around 6pm we started to get ready to head back to Jakarta . It was raining and we got stopped by the police for taking a wrong turn but since Gaspar has excellent negotiation skills, we got away with it. Everyone was pretty tired but they really enjoyed the trip. It’s not just for the climbing experience but also a chance to enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh air on the weekend.
